PhotoImpact 5, the package's image editing application, is very straightforward and features a standard Windows interface. The only unfamiliar tool for many first-time PhotoImpact users is the EasyPalette, which houses PhotoImpact's Layer Manager, Gallery and Object Library. PhotoImpact is an object-based application, and the Layer Manager allows users to arrange the bitmap, path and text-based objects created using PhotoImpact's various tools. The Gallery uses a file tree to organize the hundreds of preset filters, brushes, fills, gradients and other effects that can be applied by just double-clicking on their thumbnail images. The Object Library gives users a file tree system for one-stop access to hundreds of preset filters, selections, objects and effects. The SmartTry feature allows designers to preview effects right in the EasyPalette without affecting the image itself.
The Web Menu found in PhotoImpact 5 gives designers access to several advanced Web tools. The Web Component Designer is a wizard-based tool that quickly walks users through the creation of various Web artifacts such as banners, buttons and icons. With just a few mouse clicks and minimal typing, users can generate professional-looking graphics that have been optimized for the Web.
Additionally, any tasks or objects that require specific HTML code to work correctly-such as Java rollover buttons, image slices or image maps-can be exported directly to HTML code for simple copy-and-paste insertion into your Web pages. PhotoImpact's Effects palette contains lighting and particle effects, such as fireworks, bubbles and lens flares, which can be used to generate animated GIFs directly in PhotoImpact or can be automatically sent over to GIF Animator 3 for fine tuning. PhotoImpact even allows you to open and touch up animated GIFs. Finally, PhotoImpact 5 includes Image Optimizer, which can be used to adjust and preview different image file formats and palettes before saving.
Many other features have been added or enhanced to round out PhotoImpact's tool set, including improved text and path support, which generates crisp, clear 2D and 3D text effects. These pre-defined paths, along with most of the other effects mentioned in this article, are highly customizable. PhotoImpact 5 supports more than 35 file formats, including JPEG, GIF and PSD, and it works with standard plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop. The Visual Open feature removes the guesswork by instantly generating thumbnails for images in the directory you are searching.
